Thank you for showing an interest in fostering for Tower Hamlets Council

Foster carers make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable children. The work carried out by our foster carers means the children in our care can get the stability and support they need. We need more foster carers to join our fostering family to help us care for children in our borough who, for whatever reason, are unable to live with their birth family.

As a council, we are passionate about fostering. We want our children to thrive whilst they are in care and we believe that they get the best support when our foster carers feel supported too. We approach fostering as a family; working together as a team, celebrating
success and supporting each other though challenges.

All of our foster carers receive comprehensive benefits, support and training. Fostering is a rewarding and challenging role, with the chance for foster carers to make a real positive difference to a child or young person’s life.

What is fostering?

Fostering is a rewarding and recognised profession, it means looking after a child or young person in your home who is not able to live with their birth family.

Children need foster care for lots of different reasons. For example, their parents may be ill, in prison, or having relationship problems. Some children will have been neglected or abused. Many fostered children return to live with their own families, so they need a secure family environment while we work with their parents to ensure that they can return home safely. Other children, unable to return home, need permanent care away from their families.

Fostering is about more than just ‘parenting’. It’s a team of people working with parents and social workers to care for children.

Who can foster?

Foster carers come from all backgrounds. What's important is your interest in caring for a child.

What are the types of foster care?

There are lots of types of foster care which can suit different people depending on their circumstances.

What support will I receive?

We offer a vast range of support including allowances, 24 hour support and training opportunities.
